Dr Hopolang Cliff Maise is the Head of Clinical Unit in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Victoria Mxenge Hospital, where he combines clinical leadership with a passion for teaching, training and research.

Dedicated to developing the next generation of healthcare professionals, Dr Maise takes particular pride in training undergraduate and postgraduate students, equipping them with essential clinical knowledge and practical skills in obstetrics and gynaecology. His commitment to rigorous teaching and high standards helps prepare young clinicians for the demands of clinical practice. His research interests span general obstetrics and gynaecology, including supervising postgraduate students undertaking Master of Medicine (MMed) research. His own research has focused on cervical screening among pregnant and non-pregnant patients. He is also exploring research into placental abruption, a serious pregnancy complication involving the premature separation of the placenta from the uterus. For Dr Maise, obstetrics and gynaecology is particularly rewarding because it involves caring for both a pregnant woman and her unborn child. Witnessing positive outcomes and seeing mothers and their newborns return home healthy remains a powerful motivation in his work. He encourages young healthcare professionals to consider specialising in the discipline, highlighting its unique combination of clinical practice, teaching and research, as well as the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of women and their babies.
